Bananas, nuts, and flights.
The MCHS of Belarus published an unexpected list of where people might encounter radiation — background radiation surrounds us constantly.
Bananas. They contain potassium, a small part of which is the radioactive isotope potassium-40. For illustrative comparison of small doses, the jocular term "banana equivalent dose" is used, writes the MCHS.
Brazil nuts. In addition to potassium, they accumulate radium from the soil. The MCHS states that the radiation dose in them is a thousand times higher than in other nuts.
Cigarette smoke. Tobacco contains polonium-210 and lead-210. They get onto plants from the soil, air, and fertilizers, and when smoking, into the lungs.
Granite and New York's Grand Central Terminal. The MCHS cites the terminal as an example of a building where granite creates an elevated background. This rock can contain uranium, thorium, and potassium.
High-altitude cities. The higher a person is, the thinner the layer of atmosphere protecting them from cosmic radiation. For example, in Denver, the dose of cosmic radiation is approximately twice as high as at sea level.
Airplane flights. At high altitudes, the effect of cosmic radiation is stronger. The MCHS compared a flight from London to New York to a single fluorography.
