"Is this even legal?" A price tag at the market surprised even a lawyer
At a vegetable market in Minsk, vendors offer customers two options: buy peppers for 2.90 rubles per kilogram, or pick them yourself for 5 rubles. A reader of the "Onliner" publication shared the price tag.

"At the vegetable market, I noticed an unusual price tag: first, it states 2.90 rubles, and below that, 5 rubles if you pick the peppers yourself. This means if you choose the produce yourself, it's almost twice as expensive. But if the seller puts the peppers in, you can buy them cheaper. Is this even legal?" a reader wrote to the publication's editorial office.
According to her, this price tag was taken in one of the stalls on Yasenin Street.
The woman decided to ask the seller if she understood the conditions correctly. The seller explained that all the peppers are good, but some might have a green spot or an uneven shape. If customers are allowed to choose for themselves, they would, according to the seller, only pick the reddest and most even ones.
"I took them for 2.90, and they all turned out to be rotten," the reader added.

Journalists asked lawyer Ivan Raykevich to comment on such a practice.
"I understand that a market is a place where sometimes its own rules apply, but not to this extent, right?"
Subparagraph 1.3 of point 1 of article 5 of the law 'On Protection of Consumer Rights' establishes the consumer's right to free choice of goods, works, and services. And charging a consumer money for exercising their own right does not align with the norms of the law.
This is not even an additional service; it's simply a payment from the consumer for being allowed to exercise their rights.
In other words, for such sophisticated ways of taking money from a consumer, the seller can be held administratively liable," says the lawyer.
