New Penguin Species Described for the First Time in Over a Century
Genetic studies have shown that the population of gentoo penguins living on the Kerguelen Archipelago is genetically very different from gentoo penguins from the Falklands, where they were described as the species Pygoscelis papua. These penguins were described as a new species for science in 2026 — Pygoscelis kerguelensis, writes the Telegram channel "Wild nature nearby".

Gentoo penguins have an advantage over other species because they do not depend on a single type of prey. Krill numbers are currently declining — and for some penguin species, this is critical. But gentoo penguins can also switch to fish, squid, or cuttlefish. They don't need to swim far from their nesting sites in search of food.
However, the good news is overshadowed by a climate change-related forecast. Even with a moderate development scenario, the new species will find itself in altered conditions where it will be difficult for it to survive.
