Organizers of the meeting of foreign ministers from the Group of Twenty (G20) countries in Atlanta, USA, canceled a joint photo of participants due to the presence of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. This was reported by Bloomberg agency.

The reason was the refusal of representatives from several states to be photographed together with the Russian minister. Among those who opposed was German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul. He stated that Russia cannot be dealt with as if nothing has happened. According to him, disagreements need to be discussed at the negotiating table, but it is important to avoid deceptive visual signals.
A joint photo at such meetings is mainly ceremonial and does not directly affect the outcomes of negotiations. However, it is a long-standing tradition that aims to demonstrate the unity of world leaders. The refusal of Germany and several other countries to participate in the joint photo became a clear indication of disagreements between the US and its allies. These arose, in particular, due to President Donald Trump's attempts to draw closer to Russia as part of efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
The meeting of the heads of foreign policy departments of the world's largest economies is taking place on October 30-31. It precedes the G20 leaders' summit, which will be held in Miami in December. Trump invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to it, but he has not yet announced whether he plans to attend.
A similar situation already occurred in September at the meeting of G20 finance ministers in Asheville. At that time, US Treasury Secretary Scott Besent invited his Russian counterpart Anton Siluanov without coordinating it with other participants. Representatives from Germany and several other countries stated that they would not be photographed with him. As a result, Siluanov did not make it into the joint photo.
